Building Capacity for Citizen-Based Monitoring and Research in the Southern Appalachians
Multiple National Forests in the Southern Appalachians
To work with a number of partners to conduct a 2-day regional convening conference for Southern Appalachia which will focus on building the capacity of land managers, local community groups, and others to carry out citizen-based monitoring and research.

To use a large helicopter to place mature whole conifer trees in high-priority stream systems in Indian Creek and the North Fork Siuslaw River sub basins of the watershed in order to promote healthy stream dynamics, habitat complexity, and overall opportunity for salmonids and other species.

To improve sensitive fish habitat in the headwaters of the Yaak River, located in extreme northwest Montana, through stream surveys, fish distribution surveys, genetic lab work, and implementation of several smaller-scale rehabilitation projects as well as a large-scale native plant revegetation project.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS

Cherokee NF
To construct a climb and five observation areas to simulate the life zones of the Great Smoky Mountains while correcting an eroding hill, due to the removal of diseased and damaged trees that leads to the outdoor classroom. This is part of a collaborative community effort to create lifelong learning about forest preservation, conservation, and the use and care of public lands.

To conduct and expand a landscape-level conservation project coupling sustainable forest management and conservation easements in the uplands with riparian protection and restoration along the Little Tennessee River corridor.

To support volunteer monitoring efforts in and around gateway communities of the national forests and parks of the southern Appalachians. This year's work will emphasize information sharing and community and federal land manager planning using volunteer data.

To complete the hiking portion of the Unicoi Turnpike Trail project, and make it available for public use. This 3-mile section of trail exists inside the borders of the Cherokee National Forest.

To create a series of stream enhancements which will stabilize the Davidson River riverbank, create improved access points to the river, and help improve water flow, resulting in healthier trout habitat. Hardened paths and a covered pavilion will improve accessibility and serve as an outdoor classroom for visiting school and other groups.

Chattooga Conservancy (GA, NC, SC)
Partnership Work with the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Project

To support the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Biological Control effort in three main ways: 1. Use GIS to create a map of HWA infested spots in the watershed; 2. Conduct widespread public outreach and education, lead a regional HWA strategy session.

To link birding and wildlife viewing sites into a cohesive Trail that showcases the Selway-Bitterroot ecosystem, expands recreational opportunities, and generates long-term revenue for local communities.

Montana Water Trust (MT)
The Bitterroot Watershed Instream Flow Enhancement Project
Bitterroot NF
To work with communities in the Bitterroot Watershed to identify instream flow enhancement opportunities, to negotiate agreements with wiling water right holders for the transfer of consumptive water rights to instream use, to apply to the DNRC for approval of these rights, and to measure/monitor instream rights to ensure their protection and evaluate their ecological benefits to native fish species.

Clearwater Resource Conservation and Development (ID, MT)
Frank Church- River of No Return Wilderness, Integrated Noxious Weed Management Strategy
Nez Perce, Bitterroot, Salmon-Challis, Payette NF
To restore and maintain pristine wilderness plant communities and healthy watersheds by detecting and controlling exotic noxious/invasive weeds through a collaborative project within the wilderness.
